Kerala backwaters are a unique nature and are found nowhere else in the world. On your tour to Kerala you can enjoy visiting the Kerala Backwaters, which is a network of lakes, canals, and estuaries and deltas of forty-four rivers that drain into the Arabian Sea. Backwaters of Kerala are a self-supporting Eco-system teeming with aquatic life.
The Canals connect the villages together and still used for local transport. This land which is believed to have sprung forth from the sea continues to bask in the tender life giving care of the waters, that lap gently on its coast, cascade down its hills and valleys and rests calmly in exotic backwaters and lagoons. Kollam, located 71 km to the north of Thiruvananthapuram, this historic coastline district known for its marine and cashew industries was one of the oldest ports on the Malabar coast and a major international trading point in day gone by.

Kerala Beaches: South India is never really cool, but pleasantly warm in winter. On your Kerala tour you can visit the Varkala beach during the month of October, as it is cool and secluded. Varkala is 54 km from Thiruvananthapuram and 37 km from Kollam.

Varkala beach is famous for mineral springs with a fantastic massage and is an important Hindu pilgrim center also. The 2000-year-old Janardana Swamy Temple and the Nature Center are the two main attractions of Varkala Beach. A dip in the holy waters of Varkala beach is believed to pure the body and the soul of all the sins. Marari is another popular beach that you can visit on your Kerala tour. It originates from "Mararikulam", one of the local fishing villages, where life still goes on much as it did a hundred years ago, with the men going out to sea each day to earn a living bringing in the daily catch. Completely new to the holidaymaker. Marari offers endless miles of superb sand beaches backed by swaying palms, virgin territory where you can experience to local charm and traditional Keralan hospitality at its best.

Kerala Houseboats Houseboats: Houseboats are converted 'kettuvalloms'. Enjoy a comfortable stay at these houseboats while on tour to Kerala. For your comfort the boat has a bath attached double bedrooms with modern comforts, a living cum dining room, sundeck and a kitchen. The boat has solar lamps and fans. The Houseboats are of premium category. In a one bedroom boat the living cum dining room is bigger in size. This boat can accommodate two persons. The two-bedroom boat also has a living cum dining room. This boat can accommodate four persons. Eco-friendly materials like bamboo mat, Arecanut trees, and coir are used to construct the boat. A distinctive feature of the kettuvallom is the design suggesting the possible Chinese influence. Traditionally, the boat only had a single such opening on either side. But our houseboats have three, thus ensuring plenty of shade, cool breeze, and a better view of the passing scenery."Kettuvallam" means stitched boat. They are 70 feet long, made with wooden planks, joined and stitched together with coir ropes and painted on the outside with cashew nut shell oil or fish oil. A distinctive feature of the Kettuvallam is the design suggesting the possible Chinese influence. These Kettuvallams were used for transporting huge quantities of heavy materials from one place to another. In certain areas Kettuvallams are still used for transferring Coconut Husk, Sand and other goods. In earlier days since all places were not well connected by roads, Kettuvallams were the main source of transportation through the Kerala backwaters.
