Darjeeling: The most important and organized hill resort in Eastern India is Darjeeling, which lies 686 kms from Calcutta perched at a height of 2134 meters with a backdrop of the mighty snow, clad Himalayan Peaks. The mighty Kanchenjunga peak overlooks the town from where one can get a clear view of the peak on a sunny day. The world's highest peak The Everest can also be seen from near the town. Kalimpong: Kalimpong lies 53 kms from Darjeeling at an altitude of 1219, famous for its arts and crafts and for its Buddhist Monastery. On your travel to Kalimpong from Darjeeling you will come across many picturesque sites. An ideal place for a quite holiday, where Bhutias and Tibetans trade their wares at the central market square. Kalimpong is located in the northern part of the state of West Bengal, India. It is adjacent to the state of Sikkim and near the Teesta River. It is set amongst the foothills of the mighty Himalayas at an altitude of 1250 m above sea level. Kalimpong is 50 km from Darjeeling and 80 km from Gangtok.

Mirik: Mirik, the youngest hill station of India, is built around a 1.25 km long natural lake. Visit the magical hill resort on your travel to North East India. It lies close to Siliguri in the West Bengal state of India. The peaceful and tranquil hill resort of Mirik boasts of several nature spots. The wild flowers, lovely lake and flourishing forests of Cryptomaria Japanica trees make Mirik appear as a tropical paradise. Tea estates, orange orchards and cardamom plantations surround Mirik. There is a floating fountain in the middle of the lake and a quaint little footbridge connecting the flower garden on the eastern bank to the heavily forested ridge on the west. The lake is provided with boating facilities. The place is only 49km from Darjeeling and 52km from Siliguri and can be reached from either place quite easily.

Sikkim: Tucked away in the foothills of the Himalayas, Sikkim is a Himalayan wonderland with its lovely views and exotic orchids, and its forest-trails. A virtual Shangri-La overlooks the incomparable Mountain Kanchenjunga, the world's third highest peak. Travel to Gangtok, India Gangtok: Gangtok is the capital city of Sikkim, the second smallest state of India. In Gangtok you can see a smooth blend of both tradition and modernity. Located at an altitude of 1547 m above sea level, Gangtok houses some of the important Buddhist religious sites too. The existence of the peaceful Chortens or Stupas, old monasteries and the un-spoilt natural beauty of Gangtok offers you a truly unique traveling experience. The list of attractions in Gangtok is endless. The small town itself is a beautiful place to move around. It houses sites like the most important 'stupa' of Sikkim, the Do Drul Chorten, the solitary temple or the Enchey Monastery, the marvelous collection of orchids in the Orchid Sanctuary and the picturesque Tashi Ling that provides an astounding view of the Kanchenjunga range. The Namgyal Institute of Research and the Tsuk la Khang, a depository of a large collection of scriptures and the principal place of worship for the local Buddhists, are some of the other places that are worth visiting.

Nathula Pass: Travel to North East India would take you to the Nathula Pass situated on the Sikkim -Tibet frontier. The zigzag track becomes steeper as it leaves Gangtok, but makes up in the changing landscape, which becomes more sublime with every inch of ascent till it reaches the calm waters of the Lake, Nuk Tanyi in a region, which is bleak and dismal. From the summit, two roads, from both Jelap and Nathula passes unite in a track leading to the Chumbi valley of Tibet. On one side stands a chain of imposing peaks dividing Sikkim from Tibet, on the other yawning abyss of ravines and gorges.

Travel Tips: The best time to visit North East India is from March-May or September-November. In winters there is a drastic fall in temperature from the summer's 15 to 25 degrees centigrade to 2 to 10 degrees in winter. Cold months are November to February with minimum temperature dipping to 4 degree centigrade during January-February. It is between months of March to early May when sunshine is quite abundant. Summer is officially from May to September and June, July, August are the main monsoon months. Climate is pleasant all through the year. For safety you can carry one sturdy rucksack or duffel bag, pullover, jacket, hiking shoes with rubber sole, cap, gloves, woolen balaclava, torch, general clothing, sun-glasses, sun screen lotion. In addition, for rafting we advise you to also carry a change of clothes, shorts and T-shirt, sandals.
