Khangchendzonga "White Magic" trek

Travel to Pemayangtse
Introduction: Trek to Geocha-la at 5000 mtrs that takes you opposite the eastern face of Mt. Khangchendzonga (8435 mtrs.). One of the most majestic peaks, Mt. Khangchendzonga is the third highest mountain in the world.

The trek takes you through the dense sub-tropical forests of Sikkim and the grazing land of yaks.

Be prepared to beat the cold as minimum temperature can go down below zero deg centigrade and the maximum temperature will hover around 15 deg centigrade during the trek.

Day 01: Bagdogra/Bhadrapur (Nepal)- Pemayangtse: 2085mt, distance: 133/183 km.

Time: 5or 6 ½ hour (approx.) You will be received at the airport and will be driven along the Tista valley to the Sikkim border at Melli. Head towards the Rangit valley and halt at Jprethang for light snacks. Stop for lunch at Pemayangtse and overnight stay in Hotel.

Day 02: Pemayangtse- Yuksom: (1770 km) Distance: 43 km. Time: 2 hours (approx)

A tour to the 17th century Pemayangtse Monastery after breakfast at the hotel, then drive to the starting point of the trek at Yuksom. Overnight stay in Hotel.

Day 03: Yuksom-Tshoka: (2745mt.) Distance: 12 km. Time: 5 hours (approx).

Start your trek after breakfast and cross the semi-tropical forests and beautiful mountain streams. Be prepared for the last two-hour trek to Tshoka, as the climb is steep. Get a beautiful view of the majestic Mt. Pandim (6891 mt.). Night stay at the Hut/tents.

Day 04: Tshoka-Dzongri (2745 mt.,) Distance: 9 km Time: 3 hours.

Climb through the rhododendron forests and enjoy the beautiful views of the Mt. Khangchendzonga and Mt. Padim en-route. Night stay at trekker hut/tents.

Day 05: Dzongri-Thangsing (3930mtrs.) Dist: 8 km. Time: 3 hours (approx)

Take a leisurely stroll that offers a clear view of Mt. Khangchendzonga. There is short climb just before the camp and once you cross a mountain stream you are at the camp for the overnight stay (tents).

Day 06: Thangsing-Samiti Pokhari (4500mtrs.) Dist: 6 km. Time: 3 hours (approx)

The stretch up to village is even and so quite comfortable for an easy walk. At the next part you have to walk along the moraines for about half an hour before you reach the lake for overnight stay.

Day 07: Samiti Pokhari-Goechala (5002 mt.) Dist: 8 km Time: 3 hours (approx)

Start by climbing a gully and walk on an uneven trail on moraines. You can watch the eastern side of the Mt. Khangchendzonga and then descend to Samiti Pokhari. Overnight stay at Samiti Pokhari (tents).

Travel to Gangtok

Day 08: Samiti Pokhari - Thangsing :

Turn back and trek to the Thangsing river. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 09: Thangsing - Bakhim (2684 mt.) Dist: 12 km.

Instead of going back to Dzongri climb down to Phedang and then to Bakhim through dense forests. Night stay in Tents.

Day 10: Bakhim - Yuksom Dist: 12 km. Time: 4 hours (approx)

On the last day of the trek you can leisurely walk down to Yuksom. If have time you can visit the monastery and residence of Gyalwa Lhatsun Chenpo, the monk who introduced Buddhism in Sikkim in 1614 A.D. You can also stroll around the tranquil Karthok lake. Overnight in Hotel.

Day 11: Yuksom-Gangtok/Bagdogra/Bhadrapur Distance: 160km. Time: 6 hours (approx)

Prepare yourself for a long drive to Gangtok after breakfast via Rabongla. Halt at Rabongla for lunch. Reach Gangtok and transfer to hotel.
